Food Trip #19: Chicken Charlie

My fingers were literally trembling as I was typing the word “food blog”. Its been almost a year since I wrote my last food review, after that I somehow lost my drive, or my passion towards food – on trying out new things and even the enthusiasm to just look for new establishments. I pondered about it and figured food was just a passing passion, I lost my voracity, simple as that.

Yesterday I got so friggin’ bored that I texted Debbie to meet up with me. I can always trust her to be on her toes when it comes to things like this, hehe. She’s truly a kaladkarin, bless her heart. 🙂 I told her to come to QC (because she’s staying at Makati) so we can dine at Chicken Charlie!

While we were there, she told me I’m good at food blogging, and pushed me to go back into writing about food. She even told me I lost that twinkle in my eyes, whatever the hell that means, hahaha. Anyway, I told her I’ll give food blogging another shot. So here goes nothing!

Bonchon is a double frying technique which they say is a healthier alternative for our regular fried chicken. Basically, you fry the chicken twice using vegetable oil, the first fry is for the removal of the chicken fat and the second fry is for giving that piece of chicken a distinctive crunch. Don’t ask me how the hell that became more healthier,but that is exactly bonchon’s claim to fame. I’m still a bit confused on where exactly the “bonchon” technique originated, if its in Korea or America. I’m guessing the idea really came from Korea and it was US which capitalized and popularized it.

Chicken Charlie, I take, is the first bonchon chicken outlet here in the Metro, the place is really small. Located at the corner of Banawe and N.S. Amoranto, it can only be occupied by at most 15 people. We got there around 1pm and we still have to wait for a couple of minutes to be sitted. They say this restaurant is almost always packed, so it would be a great idea to expand and take up the rest of the strip, don’t you think? There were a lot of chinese people in the vicinity, as in. If you eat here you’ll be dining with at least one chinese family or a chinese couple, I’m betting on that.

Chicken Charlie prepare their chicken as you order it, meaning you really have to wait for your order for about 30 minutes, but all I can say is, Chicken Charlie is really worth the wait!

A bowl of rice topped with crispy chicken bits and sweet soy sauce. Yummy! This is a complete lunch for only P60. If they can serve this in  food stalls like the ones we usually find in malls, the world will be a better place. Hahaha.

That right there is Chicken Charlie’s star. I’m telling you, once you’ve tasted bonchon, you’ll never go back to regular fried chicken! Max’s is even pale in comparison. Its sweet and crunchy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Trust me, you have to taste at least one bonchon chicken in your lifetime!

Crispy potato wedges, a perfect side dish for the chicken, but this is kid’s stuff! GIVE ME THE CHICKEN! MORE CHICKEN!
Bundaberg Sarsaparilla P90
Aren’t they adorable? They remind me of old western movies with sheriffs,cowboys and stuff like that. It’s a bit pricey for a single bottle, but you still have to try a sarsaparilla or simply an old-fashioned root beer, even just for experience. 
For the verdict: The chicken is a total bomb! I will never look at chicken the same way again. The sign on their wall really lived up to what Chicken Charlie is all about: You  think you know fried chicken, chicken you’ve never had before.
The price is also acceptable, we only paid around 500 for the meal we had. The only down side I can think of is how small the place is. And please, can anyone franchise Chicken Charlie? Preferably around Cubao area? Thanks!
